Lexus RX PHEV

Importing a used Lexus RX PHEV from the USA

The Lexus RX PHEV — sold in North America as the RX 450h+ — is the plug-in variant of the fifth-generation RX, and it is one of the more sensible reasons to import a used luxury SUV from the United States. It pairs a proven Toyota hybrid architecture with a usable electric-only range, and the US market carries plenty of well-optioned, low-mileage examples. As an independent broker, USCar Trader sources these cars for German and EU buyers, handles the paperwork, and never marks up the vehicle price. This guide walks through what the RX PHEV actually is, what to look for on the used American market, and how the import lands in Germany.

Model history: years and generations

The RX has defined the premium mid-size SUV segment since 1998. The lineage runs through the XU10 (RX 300, 1998), the XU30 that introduced the first hybrid RX 400h in 2005, the AL10 (2009), and the AL20 (2015). The plug-in hybrid, however, is exclusively a fifth-generation (AL30) model, launched for the 2023 model year on Toyota's GA-K platform. So if you are shopping for a used RX PHEV, you are effectively looking at 2023–2025 cars — this is a young, modern vehicle, not a decade-old design. The fifth-gen RX brought a stiffer body, a reworked 14-inch touchscreen interface, and the split of the range into RX 350, RX 350h, RX 500h F Sport Performance, and the RX 450h+ plug-in.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The RX 450h+ uses the 2.5-litre A25A-FXS four-cylinder (Atkinson-cycle) combined with two electric motor-generators and a rear axle motor for permanent E-Four all-wheel drive. Total system output is around 304 hp (227 kW), routed through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). The 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery delivers an EPA-rated electric range of roughly 37 miles (about 50 km), which comfortably covers a typical commute before the petrol engine ever fires. Expect 0–100 km/h in the low six-second range. On-board AC charging tops the pack up in a few hours; there is no DC fast charging, which is normal for this class of PHEV.

Equipment lines and body styles

The RX PHEV is a five-seat, two-row SUV only — there is no third row on this generation. In the US it was typically sold in a well-equipped Premium or Luxury specification, frequently with the panoramic roof, Mark Levinson audio, head-up display, heated and ventilated seats, and the 21-inch wheel package. Because American buyers tend to option luxury SUVs heavily, imported examples are often better equipped than comparable European-market cars.

The US used market

Supply is steady across the sun-belt and coastal states, where PHEVs sold well. Most used RX 450h+ examples show light mileage — many are lease returns with 15,000 to 45,000 miles — and thanks to Toyota/Lexus build quality they tend to arrive in strong mechanical condition. Look for clean single-owner histories and complete Lexus dealer service records. Salt-belt cars can show underbody corrosion, so a southern-state car is usually the better import candidate.

Is an import right for you?

An RX PHEV import makes sense for a buyer who wants a quiet, reliable electrified luxury SUV, values Lexus long-term durability, and can charge at home. If you want the electric-commute benefit without full-EV range anxiety, this is the RX to import a used example of from the USA.

Common issues buyers should know

The RX PHEV inherits one of the industry's most proven hybrid systems, and early reliability has been strong. The known watch-points are less about failures and more about wear: 21-inch wheels ride firmly and can suffer kerb and pothole damage; the panoramic roof drains should be checked for blockage; and infotainment software on very early 2023 cars occasionally needed dealer updates. As with any PHEV, confirm the high-voltage battery has a clean state-of-health readout and that the car has seen regular use — a plug-in left uncharged for long periods is not ideal. Keep to Lexus service intervals and the powertrain should prove long-lived.

Differences from the European version

US cars run amber side markers, a different rear lamp signature, and daytime running light calibration that does not always match German requirements. Headlight aim and, on some cars, the addition of a rear fog lamp are typical TÜV items. The odometer reads in miles and must be documented in kilometres for registration. Infotainment and navigation are US-mapped; European map data and language packs are usually a straightforward dealer or software change.

Import step by step

The process runs: vehicle selection and inspection in the US, VIN and build-origin check, secure payment via escrow, inland transport to the export port, ocean freight to a European port (typically Bremerhaven), German customs clearance, technical inspection and individual approval (TÜV/§21 Einzelabnahme), then local registration. USCar Trader coordinates each stage so the car arrives road-ready.

Customs and taxes: what applies

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Two charges are separate and must not be confused. First, the import duty: the 0% EU rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 applies only where US origin is provable by VIN and plant, for directly transported vehicles, and only until 31 December 2029. The RX PHEV is typically built in Japan, so the standard passenger-car duty rate generally applies unless the specific VIN proves otherwise — we never promise duty-free. Second, the German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) of 19% always applies, regardless of origin, and is calculated on the customs value plus duty and freight.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Expect lighting adjustments (headlamp aim, possible rear fog lamp), documentation of the odometer conversion, and a COC or individual approval to satisfy §21. Once the car passes, you register it locally and receive German plates. Lexus's global platform means most changes are minor.

What to verify before buying

  • Decode the VIN to confirm exact build plant and origin.
  • Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents and title branding.
  • Confirm a clean, non-salvage, non-rebuilt title.
  • Check high-voltage battery state of health and charging function.
  • Inspect underbody for salt-belt corrosion.
  • Verify complete Lexus service records.
  • Photograph 21-inch wheels for kerb/pothole damage.

Common questions

Is the Lexus RX PHEV the same as the RX 450h+?

Yes. RX 450h+ is the North American name for the plug-in hybrid RX; PHEV is the generic label.

What electric range does a used RX PHEV have?

Around 37 miles (50 km) on the EPA cycle when new; a used car depends on battery state of health, which we always check.

Which model years are available used?

Because the plug-in only launched in 2023, used examples are 2023–2025 cars.

Do I pay import duty on an RX PHEV?

Usually yes, because it is typically Japanese-built. The 0% EU rate needs provable US origin, so the rate depends on the actual VIN and plant.

Does the 19% import VAT always apply?

Yes. German import VAT applies to every import regardless of origin and is charged separately from any duty.

Can it DC fast charge?

No. The RX 450h+ uses AC charging only, which is standard for this PHEV class.

Will it pass German TÜV?

Yes, after typical lighting adjustments and an individual approval. It is a modern global platform car.

Does USCar Trader mark up the car price?

No. We are an independent broker and charge a transparent service fee, not a vehicle margin.
